A Civic Engagement Activity by Marvellous Olusegun, EPLF Fellow
In a bid to fulfill his Civic Engagement Activity, Marvellous engaged 1571 persons in a Twitter Space discussion that focused on the topic: “ 2023 General Elections: Beyond the Noise.”
As an active user of the micro-blogging site, with a few thousand followers on Twitter, I decided to actively engage my audience under the topic: 2023 elections – Beyond the Noise! This topic was specially curated to address the misinformation, propaganda, etc that have plagued our social media and political space and also contributed to the drowning of relevant information leading to the election. A Twitter space was set up and 3 speakers were invited.
Outcomes
The participants engaged the speakers in a conversation about the 2023 General elections, and they also asked questions on issue-based campaigns and shunning propaganda. Various resolutions bordering on the discussion topic were made. Chief of these resolutions is the need to constantly engage the public and sensitize them on their roles and responsibilities before, during, and after the elections.
Next Steps
Retrospectively, Marvellous has decided to continually engage the public and raise much-needed awareness leading up to the election. As he looks forward to many more engagements with seasoned speakers from the platform the Emerging Political leadership program has provided him.
