On July 11, 2024, our Fellows hosted their first Green Circle Conversation via a Facebook Live conversation focused on “The Impact of the 2023 Elections on Economic Policies in Nigeria.” The event featured 15 participants, including our fellows that served as speakers: Ademola Oluoloniyo, Juliet Ikhayere, and Ariyo Odeyemi, with Toluwani Ojo-Lanre serving as moderator.
Objectives of this discourse was:
- To facilitate a policy discussion that engages the broader public, reflecting the programme’s commitment to public engagement.
- To shape public perception of the programme and the fellowship positively.
- To enhance leadership skills and promote effective public engagement and collaboration among fellows.
- To expand the political knowledge and perspectives of emerging political leaders.
The discussion revealed several important insights:
- Public Awareness: There is a general lack of awareness among Nigerians about political issues, leading to misplaced blame. The discussion emphasized that responsibility for national challenges extends beyond the President to all elected officials. Participants highlighted the importance of understanding that elections are just the beginning, and ongoing accountability for leaders is crucial.
- Core Issues: The conversation identified key issues facing Nigeria: abuse of office, lack of political will, and cluelessness, rather than problems with policy-making or implementation.
The discourse concluded with recommendations for leveraging the positive impacts of elections on economic policies. It called for political leaders to address the negative impacts affecting the nation and its citizens. Additionally, it was recommended that fellows actively participate in more live events and Green Circle Conversations to enhance engagement and attendance.
