An Civic Engagement Activity by Isah Dahiru, EPLF Fellow
The sole objective of this Activity was to provide correct and relevant information on pressing matters affecting our communities. Also, to strengthen advocacy and civic engagement activities in Jigawa State, and to foster unity and do away with regionalism in Jigawa State.
The program was implemented in two phases: A Local radio program at Sawaba FM 104.9 Hadejia in Jigawa State on the topic “Strengthening Advocacy and Civic Engagement In Jigawa State” which was in both English Language and Hausa, on Saturday, 19th November 2022, and a Community hangout and town hall discourse on the topic “Role of youth and digital media in strengthening citizens’ interests” on the 20th of November 2022. The Target Audience was Youths, Policymakers, Civil servants, and Community leaders.
The local radio hangout was targeted at local communities and it recorded a massive reach out. During the allotted time, 210 incoming calls were recorded, 48 calls were responded to, and 19 short messages were received. Listeners from the online social media page who joined reacted by commenting during the live streaming. Invariably, the aims and objectives of the program were achieved.
Outcomes
The community hangout recorded great success, and in attendance were 27 invited community leaders and 5 CSOs, who showed up despite the short notice.
Next Steps
In ensuring community engagement, a collaborative working process with and through groups of people affiliated by geographic proximity, special interest, or similar situations to address issues affecting the well-being of citizens will be a powerful vehicle to bring about environmental and behavioral changes that could positively impact our communities and bring the desired change. This is the actionable next step that will further strengthen the pulse of civic engagement in Nigeria.
